GB2RS AMATEUR RADIO NEWS BROADCAST
----------------------------------
This information is prepared by the Radio Society of Great
Britain and broadcast each Sunday on the 80, 40, and 2 metre bands
by stations in all parts of the country.
This is the GB2RS news broadcast for the week commencing
Sunday, 28th September.
SOLAR FACTUAL DATA
------------------
Solar factual data for the period between 15th and 21st
September. There was considerable magnetic activity during this
period and a sudden storm commencement took place on the 16th.
Magnetic activity of this sort is quite common around the equinox.
The sunspot count for the period was zero. Solar flux levels varied
slightly from day to day and averaged 68 units.
The geomagnetic A index was unsettled and at times it reached
sub storm level. The period averaged 16 units, although the 18th was
up to 23 units. As a matter of fact the period was the most severely
disturbed of any since last February and northerly circuits were
severely affected.
The visual aurora on the 12th was seen in the United States as
far south as New Mexico. It is possible that this aurora could
repeat on the 8th or 9th. The Inda index for the period between the
8th and 14th was up to storm levels, mainly due to the aurora.
Sporadic E was reported on the 20th with an opening taking place on
144 MHz.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (ENGLAND & WALES)
----------------------------------
F2 critical frequencies declined steadily during the period
from a reasonably high level of 6.1 MHz down to 5.4 MHz by the 21st.
The average for the period was 5.5 MHz. During the last year the
mean level has declined by almost 1 MHz. The darkness hour levels
have also continued to decline but this is partly because of
seasonal effects. The average for the period was 2.1 MHz.
IONOSPHERIC DATA (SCOTLAND & NORTHERN IRELAND)
-----------------------------------------------
There was considerable absorption during darkness hours of the
period: there was also a good deal of absorption, some sporadic E
and also some spread F. Some 5 or 6 hours of every day of the period
was affected. The lows averaged 1.7 MHz and the seasonal decline has
now levelled out. The daylight F2 critical frequencies have affected
by the recent high magnetic levels and decline during the period
from 5.4 MHz to 4.8 MHz. Mean levels have declined by about 1 MHz
during the past year.
SOLAR FORECAST
--------------
The high levels of geomagnetic activity are expected to die
down this week and more stable conditions should return. The solar
flux is not expected to change from its present level by very much.
The decline in geomagnetic levels should certainly be noticable by
the 30th and indeed the quiet levels which may be established by
then are likely to be the quietest of the current rotation. However,
because of various effects associated with the equinox this quiet
period is not likely to last for more than about a week. Ionospheric
levels in the south could well correspond to MUFs around 20 MHz and
in the north to about 17 MHz.
The OSCAR 10 satellite is still giving problems and as we said
last week the transponder should not be used under any
circumstances. The present problems is a direct result of the
incorrect inclination achieved by the satellite when it was first
launched - as a result of this, the satellite passes through the Van
Allen radiation belt twice each day. The intense radiation which the
satellite experiences has destroyed a major part of the memory of
its housekeeping computer, known as the I.H.U., which stands for
Intergrated Housekeeping Unit.
A good deal of work is being carried out by AMSAT to try and
resolve the problem and regular updates on the situation are being
given on the numerous AMSAT nets which take place around the UK. For
the present, however, the most important thing is that the satellite
transponder must not be used under any circumstances, even if mode B
is heard.
Some repeater news. Just over a fortnight ago the Society's
news letter for repeater groups was sent out, together with an
important letter about emergency closedown procedures. Any repeater
keeper who has not seen this package should write as soon as posible

Hertfordshire areas. Their function would be to liaise between the
repeater groups and the RMG in each of these areas. Anyone who would
like to assist the Society in this way is invited to apply for more
information. Please send a stamped addressed envelope to :-
